After earning his medical degree at the University of Tokyo, he completed additional training at the University of Tokyo Hospital, the Free University of Berlin, and the Mayo Clinic and the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine.

Dr. Fukushima invented many of the skull-based techniques and instruments that neurosurgeons use today. He has published hundreds of articles in journals, and numerous book chapters related to neurosurgery. He has also presented his work at hundreds of international and national conferences.
He’s currently on the editorial board for Neurosurgery, British Journal of Neurosurgery, and Neurologia Medico-chirurgica.
Dr. Fukushima has provided service to multiple foundations, including serving on the Board of Directors of Southern Tohoku Research Institute for Neuroscience; as the Director, International Neurosurgery Education & Research Foundation; and as the Chairman of the Medical Sciences Department of the Japan Brain Foundation.
