He obtained his B.A. degree in Human Biology from Johns Hopkins University in 1976, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the oldest undergraduate honors organization in the United States. In 1979, he acquired his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1979 and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
